The West Indian manatee lives in Georgia’s coastal waters on its summer migration. This large marine mammal often called the “mermaids of the sea” can weigh up to 2,500

pounds. The population is threatened though by habitat loss, and now faces issues with boats, barges and canal locks. It is listed as a high priority animal in the Georgia State Wildlife Action Plan which protects them from hunting and harassment.
